A Whole-House Color Palette: Lessons Learned

A Whole-House Color Palette: Lessons Learned

We have had a beautiful spring here in Minnesota! What a gift from God. Does anyone else get the itch to rearrange the house and freshen up this time of year? With the sun streaming in the windows and the weather changing outside, it feels right to me to change things up inside, too.

Some of the rearranging was necessary because my potted palm had grown so well it had become too big for my kitchen window! But where to put it? As I moved some items around, I realized something about our home that I really like and I wanted to share it as a Lesson Learned.

Kid-Friendly Dining Chairs

Kid-Friendly Dining Chairs

Last week I wrote about dining chairs with young kids, and I received some great feedback from you guys! I'm thankful for that. That post mostly talked about what to avoid, so I wanted to follow up to let you know some better options!

When I think of what would make for a really practical chair with young kids, I prioritize smooth and hard surfaces that are easy to wipe down, very few nooks and crannies, and something super sturdy. While woven chairs like these are gorgeous, I can just imagine peanut butter and jelly stuck between the fibers. That's the stuff housekeeping nightmares are made of!

Dining Chairs and Kids: Lessons Learned

Dining Chairs and Kids: Lessons Learned

It's probably not super encouraging to start off in January talking about things I regret, but I really hope that these Lessons Learned posts will help you guys avoid some of the mistakes I've made. Last time, I wrote what I've learned about painting wood white. This time, I'm talking about choosing dining chairs with kids in mind. (This post contains affiliate links.)

Lesson Learned: In our house, dining chairs with fabric seats were not a good idea.

Let's go back in time to 2011. We had recently finished our kitchen and we needed chairs and counter stools. Ben and I did not have children yet. What that means is that I did not understand how grimy the whole mealtime-with-kids situation can be.

Transitioning Decorations from Christmas to Winter

Transitioning Decorations from Christmas to Winter

For the past month or so, I've been mulling over some ideas for how to stretch holiday decorating dollars. When the stores start to put out Christmas decorations in late fall, I get so excited to add a few pieces to my holiday collection! But when the decorating budget is tight, it can be hard to spend money on home decor items that only last a month or so during Christmastime. Do you face the same struggle?

Let me walk you through how I transitioned our hearth and mantel decorations from Christmas to winter. Then I've got some general principles to help you think about how you can do the same—all with the goal of helping you get the most bang for your decorating buck. Here we go.

I was really ready to take down the Christmas tree this year. Our living room is our everything room, so it very quickly starts to feel full and cluttered. (The Cozy Coupe is on vacation in the basement because we just needed some room to breathe. :) ) So I took down the Christmas tree the day after Christmas.

Easy Outdoor Planters for Winter

Easy Outdoor Planters for Winter

I have never really done much to decorate the outside of our house for the winter months. Part of the reason is budget. When we do have money in the budget for decor items, I usually prioritize interior stuff over exterior. Do you guys face the same struggles? Is it just a Minnesota thing since we're inside for so much of the year?

Our front porch was looking rather sad, and I am thankful to have found a way to fill it with welcoming beauty for free!

A while back, a cousin on Ben's side (Hi, Erin!) posted a picture to Instagram of a winter planter she had put together and I was super inspired. I know you can buy spruce top bundles, red dogwood branches, and pretty birch logs for sale at grocery stores and nurseries, but they were kind of expensive and I just couldn't pull the trigger. Not when I would rather save that money for maybe putting together a little playroom in the basement (ahem). Ya hear me?

Easy DIY Fireplace Filler Idea (with a Seasonal Upgrade!)

Easy DIY Fireplace Filler Idea (with a Seasonal Upgrade!)

Do you have a fireplace? Our living room has a wonderful fireplace, but we don't use it to build fires. One of the reasons is that the chimney leaks a lot of cold air into the room. We considered a gas insert but it was mighty spendy! For now, we have a Chimney Balloon and a piece of foam insulation jammed up there to help keep out the cold.

That works for us, but we were left with a big black box. A few years ago, we were trimming our beloved birch tree (A white tree! How beautiful!) and I had Ben cut up the branches into logs to stack in the fireplace. The white pops off the black firebox and I think it looks cool, although the inside of the firebox could use a good cleaning and touch-up. Add it to the list!

Bins and Baskets around the House

Bins and Baskets around the House

Hi all! This was a really exciting week for me. On Tuesday, Gabrielle at Design Mom posted an interview and tour of our home as part of her Living With Kids series. I'm guessing that some of you are here because of that interview. Welcome to you!

That interview was so. much. fun. She asked some really thought-provoking questions. The interview gave me a chance to reflect on what God has done in my heart in the area of contentment (and the story of how He provided our home!) and even dream about what this blog might become!

White Paint Colors - Benjamin Moore Moonlight White & Vanilla Milkshake

White Paint Colors - Benjamin Moore Moonlight White & Vanilla Milkshake

Hey, all! We're talking paint colors over here. I was happy to share my two favorites last week (literally, I love those colors so much and I hope you use them and love them, too). Today we're tackling the subject of white walls.

You'd think white would be easy, right? But for those of you who have painted anything white, you know that there are no less than four million white colors available. What looks like a simple white can carry undertones of blue, yellow, green, lavender. From a little googling, I can see that when it comes to finding white paint, the struggle is real. Wink.

My Two Favorite Paint Colors in Our Home

My Two Favorite Paint Colors in Our Home

We had friends over for dinner on Tuesday night, and I was smiling as Ben told them his painting policy for me: he will help me paint a room the first time, but if I want to repaint, that work is up to me. :) I hope that doesn't come across as harsh, because it's not. He is so patient and knows that paint-color mistakes happen (and he even encouraged me to repaint our bedroom because he knew it wasn't right).  But his policy helps me think hard about paint colors and not be fickle because it is a lot of work to paint a room (not to mention the cost of repainting can add up!).

Through lots of trial and error, I have landed on two love love LOVE paint colors in our home. I want to share them in case you are in the market for a good, tried-and-true color (that happens to be in the aqua category, wink!). When thinking about colors, I've done my fair share of googling, so I hope my experiences helpfully contribute to the conversation and help you find colors you love.

Favorite Sources for Wall and Picture Frames

Favorite Sources for Wall and Picture Frames

Happy November, everyone! Last week, a friend commented on my Inexpensive Art Ideas post and asked where to find cute frames at good prices. She mentioned that she prefers a mix of old/new/modern/traditional in the context of a gallery wall.

So I thought about her question and compiled this list of my favorite frame sources with a mixture of styles in mind!
