I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving! We spent the day with family and it was fantastic. My mother-in-law sets up an very detailed Dickens Village each year, and Jane's eyes were wide with wonder as she explored all the little scenes—ice skaters, carolers, shoppers. Precious.Read More
Do you have a fireplace? Our living room has a wonderful fireplace, but we don't use it to build fires. One of the reasons is that the chimney leaks a lot of cold air into the room. We considered a gas insert but it was mighty spendy! For now, we have a Chimney Balloon and a piece of foam insulation jammed up there to help keep out the cold.
That works for us, but we were left with a big black box. A few years ago, we were trimming our beloved birch tree (A white tree! How beautiful!) and I had Ben cut up the branches into logs to stack in the fireplace. The white pops off the black firebox and I think it looks cool, although the inside of the firebox could use a good cleaning and touch-up. Add it to the list!Read More
Hi all! This was a really exciting week for me. On Tuesday, Gabrielle at Design Mom posted an interview and tour of our home as part of her Living With Kids series. I'm guessing that some of you are here because of that interview. Welcome to you!
That interview was so. much. fun. She asked some really thought-provoking questions. The interview gave me a chance to reflect on what God has done in my heart in the area of contentment (and the story of how He provided our home!) and even dream about what this blog might become!Read More
Hey, all! We're talking paint colors over here. I was happy to share my two favorites last week (literally, I love those colors so much and I hope you use them and love them, too). Today we're tackling the subject of white walls.
You'd think white would be easy, right? But for those of you who have painted anything white, you know that there are no less than four million white colors available. What looks like a simple white can carry undertones of blue, yellow, green, lavender. From a little googling, I can see that when it comes to finding white paint, the struggle is real. Wink.Read More
We had friends over for dinner on Tuesday night, and I was smiling as Ben told them his painting policy for me: he will help me paint a room the first time, but if I want to repaint, that work is up to me. :) I hope that doesn't come across as harsh, because it's not. He is so patient and knows that paint-color mistakes happen (and he even encouraged me to repaint our bedroom because he knew it wasn't right). But his policy helps me think hard about paint colors and not be fickle because it is a lot of work to paint a room (not to mention the cost of repainting can add up!).
Through lots of trial and error, I have landed on two love love LOVE paint colors in our home. I want to share them in case you are in the market for a good, tried-and-true color (that happens to be in the aqua category, wink!). When thinking about colors, I've done my fair share of googling, so I hope my experiences helpfully contribute to the conversation and help you find colors you love.Read More
We live about 7 minutes from our IKEA and man do we keep up that relationship. For a while, IKEA offered free breakfast on Mondays and free kids' meals on Tuesdays (not sure if that is still happening?). We used to meet a friend and her three littles there often to eat on the cheap, play with IKEA's stuff, and walk walk walk in the dead of winter. IKEA, you are a good friend. And you make a mean cinnamon roll.
I find myself increasingly drawn to Scandinavian design (fun article about it here!), and IKEA kitchens in particular fascinate me. In our kitchen, we used a custom cabinet designer and Ben hung the cabinetry, but I have been super curious about the quality, ease of assembly, and durability of an IKEA kitchen.Read More
Happy November, everyone! Last week, a friend commented on my Inexpensive Art Ideas post and asked where to find cute frames at good prices. She mentioned that she prefers a mix of old/new/modern/traditional in the context of a gallery wall.
So I thought about her question and compiled this list of my favorite frame sources with a mixture of styles in mind!Read More
We are back in the living room today! There's a little spot I haven't shown you yet—a spot that I haven't quite figured out. Here it is.
Yup. There are two big black boxes on this side of the room.
Up until a few weeks ago, there was an IKEA play tent here and our TV was down in our not-so-cozy basement. We never really used the TV, because we don't have cable and we often watch movies or shows on the computer or a laptop. BUT . . . football season! Ben likes to watch a live game on Sundays, so we brought up the TV and stand and gave the tent a little vacation.Read More
Our living room is where a lot of life happens for us. We don't have a dedicated playroom, so toys and children's books are a big part of this main living space. We use a lot of bins and baskets to store the toys, but the real storage stars of the room are the dressers.
Dressers are just brilliant—so many styles and colors and sizes! They offer a place to hide the things you don't want to be seen (storage) and room on top for things you need or want to show (surface). And doesn't it seem like people are always offering up free dressers? We have two dressers in the living room and they are a big part of why the room functions so well, I think.Read More
Happy Friday, friends! If you are popping over from StyleMutt, then please know I am thrilled you came to visit. Cate and Chelsea are so gifted and I'm very thankful they would include me in their Reader Design series. So a special welcome to the newbies!
Here's my first Five Things Friday post—a collection of all the bits and pieces, so to speak. Some things are home-decor related, and some aren't. Because life is more than decorating, right? :) And this week, I need help from you. See #5!Read More
