Sentimental Christmas Decorations

Sentimental Christmas Decorations

As I was pulling out the Christmas decorations this year, I had two little helpers who were pretty smitten with each thing I brought out: snow globes, a tiny ceramic village, a wooden Christmas tree with miniature ornaments my parents brought back from Germany.

In past years, I haven't put out all these things because frankly, I just don't have the space! I don't have a lot of surfaces in my house to display such things. We don't have a coffee table in the living room or a formal dining room where I could put a Christmas centerpiece on a table or add decorations to a sideboard.

I'm not saying this like it is a negative thing—I was just wondering where I was going to put all the little Christmas decorations my girls love! These are the sweet little things that will make their eyes wide as we pull them out each year. I wanted to find room.

A Fun Christmas Corner

A Fun Christmas Corner

When you decorate for Christmas, do you put holiday decor all throughout the house? I used to keep the Christmas decorations mostly in the living room, but since we've had the girls, I started bringing little touches into their bedrooms—and ours!

In our bedroom, I had such a blast styling up our dresser to show you the free Christmas art prints I made for you to download. The colors in the Luke 2 art print match perfectly with what we already have in the room: red and aqua.

Decorating for Christmas with Bright Colors

Decorating for Christmas with Bright Colors

It started with a bright print from Summer Harms's shop.

And then there's this whole situation happening at Target right now. My friend Beth tipped me off via Instagram so I was excited for a Target run! The bright pom-pom garland came home with us. I'm eyeing the pink bottle brush trees but I think I'll wait for the after-Christmas sales.

All this to say: Our holiday mantel this year is a bright bonanza.

Easy Fireplace Filler Idea (with a Seasonal Upgrade!)

Easy Fireplace Filler Idea (with a Seasonal Upgrade!)

Do you have a fireplace? Our living room has a wonderful fireplace, but we don't use it to build fires. One of the reasons is that the chimney leaks a lot of cold air into the room. We considered a gas insert but it was mighty spendy! For now, we have a Chimney Balloon and a piece of foam insulation jammed up there to help keep out the cold.

That works for us, but we were left with a big black box. A few years ago, we were trimming our beloved birch tree (A white tree! How beautiful!) and I had Ben cut up the branches into logs to stack in the fireplace. The white pops off the black firebox and I think it looks cool, although the inside of the firebox could use a good cleaning and touch-up. Add it to the list!

Bins and Baskets around the House

Bins and Baskets around the House

Hi all! This was a really exciting week for me. On Tuesday, Gabrielle at Design Mom posted an interview and tour of our home as part of her Living With Kids series. I'm guessing that some of you are here because of that interview. Welcome to you!

That interview was so. much. fun. She asked some really thought-provoking questions. The interview gave me a chance to reflect on what God has done in my heart in the area of contentment (and the story of how He provided our home!) and even dream about what this blog might become!

White Paint Colors

White Paint Colors

Hey, all! We're talking paint colors over here. I was happy to share my two favorites last week (literally, I love those colors so much and I hope you use them and love them, too). Today we're tackling the subject of white walls.

You'd think white would be easy, right? But for those of you who have painted anything white, you know that there are no less than four million white colors available. What looks like a simple white can carry undertones of blue, yellow, green, lavender. From a little googling, I can see that when it comes to finding white paint, the struggle is real. Wink.

My Two Favorite Paint Colors in Our Home

My Two Favorite Paint Colors in Our Home

We had friends over for dinner on Tuesday night, and I was smiling as Ben told them his painting policy for me: he will help me paint a room the first time, but if I want to repaint, that work is up to me. :) I hope that doesn't come across as harsh, because it's not. He is so patient and knows that paint-color mistakes happen (and he even encouraged me to repaint our bedroom because he knew it wasn't right).  But his policy helps me think hard about paint colors and not be fickle because it is a lot of work to paint a room (not to mention the cost of repainting can add up!).

Through lots of trial and error, I have landed on two love love LOVE paint colors in our home. I want to share them in case you are in the market for a good, tried-and-true color (that happens to be in the aqua category, wink!). When thinking about colors, I've done my fair share of googling, so I hope my experiences helpfully contribute to the conversation and help you find colors you love.
